I’m not here to push some shipping theories, but wanted to simply discuss their dynamic. Some folks describe their relationship as father-daughter, some as possibly romantic, some as big brother-little sister. But I don’t see any of those, or possibly elements of all of them? Rather, this seems like a mutual mentorship between two peers that respect one another and has blossomed into a deeper friendship. As it is the healthiest relationship that I think we see, I get why it is a bit hard to describe.

Schierke vs. Silke

Now that Casca is awakened and Guts has matured, perhaps this changes. The manga does briefly show some healthy relationships between people like Sir Laban and Sir Owen and between Skull Knight and Flora, but these are barely on display. Casca was too far gone for too many years with deep traumas, and Guts went too dark for too long with the same traumas. One element in favor of their salvaging things is that Casca seemed to want something meaningful from Guts upon waking up from her nightmares/dreams. So I sorta understand how people link the Schierke and Guts connection because this is the healthiest relationship shown in Berserk where they are both one of the best things for each other, and we want the best for an otherwise tragic journey for Guts.

Overall, Schierke and Guts quickly entered a uniquely healthy and deep bond in the manga that has multiple elements behind it and I love reading their friendship and interactions. Note that she and Farnese (and mostly Schierke as a leader) navigates Casca’s dream-world to rescue her psyche – not Guts. I think because of this, the big brother-little sister relationship catchbet review (which is a lot like a father-daughter dynamic anyways) also somewhat fails to capture their relationship. That being said, there’s elements of a father-daughter dynamic at play in how Guts looks out for Schierke in certain situations.

Most relationships (friendships or romantic) shown in Berserk have bad or unhealthy foundations. This is often because these dynamics are between wildly inconsistent people or occur between people with power asymmetries. This is shown in how Serpico follows and almost worships Farnese (but not the other way around), or how Luca’s top-heavy relationship with her friends as she bosses them around a bit even though Luca respects them and is otherwise a healthy person. Many of these relationships struggle to be healthy because each person’s flaws often dominate their interactions and weaken the bonds between them. This is shown between Casca and Guts during the Golden Age Arc – they respect each other and it could be a healthy relationship but it never takes flight as their flaws spark fights. Guts and Casca were too hot-tempered and unwilling to be vulnerable for their early relationship to be healthy.

Guts and Schierke are a unique relationship in Berserk

Looking back, the relationship between Schierke and Guts has emerged to become this incredibly warm, mutually respectful relationship that is hard to adequately describe. But it has become the best and healthiest relationship between two characters in the entire manga – one that Guts (and we as readers) desperately needed.

13 of the deluxe edition and I’m a bit confused about Schierke and Farnese’s dreams. Though if I am right about the honey representing some sort if secret Schierke has been hiding then I’d guess it’s an embarrassing one as on the 3rd slide when Isidro asks “What’s up with the honey? ” Schierke seems to look embarrassed as she then beats up Isidro like she does when he embarrasses her irl. Guts wants to keep Schierke’s spirits up and support her self-confidence and self-esteem. He seems to absolutely respect her abilities and seems to want the best for her. Of anyone in the entire anime, he is willing to open up to her about his vulnerabilities and how he feels about himself and others and his past.

She wants to see him do well and achieve his goals, and she is willing to follow him as a leader and she is also willing to step up and lead him. She also looks up to him and seeks his approval, and she listens to his support of her skills and leadership. She also has a big crush on him and this is shown many times. The Berserk wiki describes their relationship as father-daughter. But I don’t see just that kind of relationship – if this were a simple father-daughter dynamic then I think that Guts would default as the “leader” over her in most situations and he would be much more protective of her safety. Right now, even though they fight a lot they do clearly care for each other, but I don’t see any real romantic subtext.
So, I think one possibility is that they are slowly going to fall for each other somewhere down the line, and when it looks like they’re just about to get together, BAM, something goes horribly wrong, like one of them dying or something. (2) Casca and Guts are unlikely to salvage their romantic relationship, and it will leave our main protagonist as tragically available.
